About the place

Victory Square runs from the Opera building in the north to the Metropolitan Cathedral in the south, lined with early 20th-century palaces. In December 1989, Timișoara was proclaimed the first free city of the Revolution from the Opera balcony.

The Metropolitan Cathedral, with its coloured tile roof, is the seat of the Metropolis of Banat. Its basement holds a museum with more than 1,200 items, including icons on wood and glass and old church books.

Good to know

  • Dress modestly in the Cathedral, with shoulders covered.
  • Ask at the church shop about the basement museum's hours.
  • Walk from the Cathedral to the Opera in the evening, when the square is lit.
